Parquet Floor
Parquet originated in France at the Palace of Versailles in the late 1600s – a practical solution to the problem of water rotting the joists on wooden floors.
By placing wooden blocks on a solid sub-base, a little world of creativity was opened up. The arrangement of squares, triangles and lozenges – along with the contrast between the grains and shades – form one of the most impressive of all floor surfaces.
Renovation can be performed in much the same way as with conventional floorboards – often with even more spectacular results!

On the day
Stage by stage
First off, repairing the floor.
Loose blocks? Secured and glued.
Uneven floor surface. Levelled off.
Missing or damaged areas?
We will either use unwanted blocks from adjacent rooms – or find them elsewhere.
This can be a challenge… Parquet comes in many sizes and shapes – particularly during the period 1930-70 when it became popular in a great diversity of properties. Fortunately, we have access to reclaimed sources, so will be able to find the right match. And if they don’t fit, we’ll cut them to size!
Any small gaps can be filled with a mixture of wood dust and resin.
Old hearths, fireplaces or other unwanted features?
No problem. We can remove these and fill in the space with fresh blocks.
The personal touch
Sanding away
The repaired floor is now ready for sanding: using paper of varying grades to strip away all traces of old paint, varnish and lacquer. Have no fears. Modern sanding is practically dust free. Our cylinder machines are far more efficient in comparison to the old drum sanders you may hire from a shop.
With their unique collection system – collecting dust with bags outside each room – and careful sealing of doors and windows – the job will create little or no mess.
Rooms vary in shape and can have awkward corners and areas. So we use handheld machines and even hand-sanding to make sure every nook and cranny is left smooth and perfect.
A new look?
Protection
And now for the final part of the process: sealing the floor for good looks and withstanding the pressure of feet. Sealants come in three main groups:
natural oil: the traditional wooden floor covering – beautiful and glowing.
hard wax oil; a mix of wax and oil for harder wear. It penetrates the wood for a non glossy look.
Both of these are great at enhancing the wood’s natural grain. lacquer – a synthetic sealant: versatile, hard-wearing and long-lasting. The ideal choice for areas with high traffic in the workplace or home.
Modern lacquers have come on apace with natural looks and – being water-based – are completely safe around pets and children.
No skimping here. We chose only the highest quality floor restoration materials. Your stains and sealants will last longer, keep their covering and offer great value.
Easy after-care
Your new floor deserves a little TLC to keep it in great condition.
Oils may need a light refresh coat as the surface dries out.
Lacquers merit a light sanding down and a thin fresh coat.
Regular sweeping will suffice rather than vacuum cleaners with revolving brushes. Avoid excess moisture – a damp mop is all that is needed.
